To be successful in design, a mixture of practicality and good imagination must be combined together. Too much of the prior creates the risk of blending in with the masses- ultimately accomplishing nothing new and boring your viewer. Too much of the latter creates the risk of going beyond the goal of the project- ultimately confusing your viewer with the unexpected. In the end, good design will deliver a practical solution to convey the message in a format that keeps the viewer interested and excited about what you have to offer them.
